CASSINI CAPTURES SATURN’S STORM
The Cassini spacecraft has captured the highest resolution of Saturn’s polar hexagon to date, and a short movie shows the movement of currents within the bizarre jet stream. You can view the full-size .gif here.
Color enhancement shows the turbulence of this unique storm, which has been raging for decades if not centuries. The color makes it easier for scientists to differentiate between large and small particles that swirl in the hexagonal vortex. As the contrast between colors shows in this image, smaller particles dominate inside the hexagon where the jet stream acts as a barrier.
Late last year, the Sun began to illuminate the interior of Saturn, allowing a better glimpse of the polar storm (see here and here). Scientists are anticipating Saturn’s approaching summer solstice in 2017, when the lighting conditions at its north pole will be optimum.
